Sledge Hammer Weight Chart

Sledge hammers are sold by head weight, and the weight you need is set by what you are hitting and how long you have to swing. A 4 kg head on a 900 mm handle delivers more usable force than a 10 kg head on a short handle used by someone who cannot control it.

Which weight for which job

4 kg is the portable option: fencing, stakes, light demolition, and the weight most often bought for general site use. 6 kg is the compromise for breaking concrete and formwork where a 4 kg head needs too many blows.

8 kg and 10 kg are production tools: quarry, railway, heavy demolition. They are not bought for occasional use, because the risk of injury rises faster than the productivity gain.

Handle length multiplies force

Force comes from head mass times swing speed. A 900 mm handle lets a 4 kg head reach speed a 600 mm handle cannot, which is why a longer handle often outperforms a heavier head. It is also why the handle should match the user's height.

Safety points buyers ask about

Check the wedge and the eye before every shift; a loose head is the most common failure. Wear eye protection, and never strike two sledge hammers together — the faces can chip. For railway and quarry work, specify the head hardness and the handle grade at order time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard weight of a sledge hammer?

4 kg, 6 kg, 8 kg and 10 kg cover most trade use. 4 kg is the most common export size; 10 kg is for heavy demolition and quarry work.

Is a heavier sledge hammer always better?

No. Force depends on head mass and swing speed. A 4 kg head on a 900 mm handle often delivers more usable force than a 10 kg head the user cannot swing properly.

How long should a sledge hammer handle be?

600 to 900 mm depending on weight. Heavier heads need longer handles so the arc does the work rather than the arms.

What is the difference between a sledge hammer and a club hammer?

A club hammer is a short-handled one-hand tool, usually 1 to 2 kg. A sledge hammer is a two-hand tool starting at 4 kg.

Do you supply sledge hammers with fibreglass handles?

Yes, hickory, fibreglass and steel handles are available across the range.
